Abstract

The recent rise of thrifting, driven by the expansion of digital media, has become a widespread phenomenon. This study explores the interpersonal communication patterns involved in thrifting transactions at Pasar Senen, Jakarta. Specifically, it examines how communication between buyers and sellers facilitates transactions and identifies communication barriers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that both verbal and non-verbal interpersonal communication are employed during transactions. The dominant pattern is primary communication between buyers and sellers, while a secondary pattern occurs among sellers via WhatsApp groups used to share information and report facility issues in the market. In conclusion, effective verbal and non-verbal communication enables successful transactions, supported by coordinated seller communication regarding market operations.
